Mental Health and Entrepreneurship
I want to start off by saying that if it weren’t for becoming a small business owner (i have two shops, an airbnb and a podcast) - that I wouldn’t have started my wellness and healing journey as soon as I did. When I worked as a marketing manager and event planner, prior to starting my own things, I was much more happy-go-lucky and was able to have a work life and a personal life.
Owning a small business is absolutely not for everyone. I am incredibly grateful for everything i’ve been able to create but I think it gets totally over-romanticized on social media. Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE my businesses and I would not go back and do it differently. However, I can’t deny the mental, emotional, spiritual, social, physical and financial toll it has taken on me.
The first few years were ROUGH. I started my first business in January 2020 and we all know how the rest of that year went. It’s hard to know if my journey would’ve been significantly easier if I hadn’t unknowingly chose like the worst time to navigate all that but it definitely made me stronger, smarter and more self-reliant.
All that to say, I am finally getting to a better place with it all - going to therapy, finding practices that keep me grounded, setting boundaries, saying no, refraining from overextending myself, making sure I put myself first as often as possible and remember that i am working to live, not living to work… no matter how much i love my businesses.
