Secondhand Baby Shopping Finds
If you know me even slightly… you’ll know my love of thrifting. I mean I literally own a secondhand store so clearly, it’s a huge passion of mine. Naturally, when I found I was pregnant, the enjoyment of thrifting extended to baby items!
I feel like there’s a lot of stigmas around buying secondhand / used items for your children. I’ve read things online that it’s unsanitary or that your precious baby deserves better. Now don’t get me wrong, I plan to spoil him but I place more value on the quality, fabric and longevity of the item. I would rather purchase a secondhand cotton onesie (that I can wash!) than a new polyester onesie. I’m also picking out items that look nearly new as they’ve been lightly worn and thoughtfully laundered, not stained and piled items.
Thankfully, there are many people in The Netherlands who share this same value. On our street, we have not one… but two secondhand baby stores! Look at how absolutely adorable their display is, nothing gross or dirty about it.
Resale Baby Boutiques:
From Kind Collective, we picked out a striped onesie and beige sweater onesie (left) and a long sleeve brown onesie, terracotta trousers and baby blue trousers (right).
From Opa Drop, we got a pair of tan colored long overalls and a cream sweater (middle). All items are made of cotton and the total for all seven items was $62. They’re good brands, in great condition and super cute so I think that’s a solid deal. Plus, we were able to support a local business and keep items in circulation longer by extending their lifecycle!
Thrift Finds:
We also went to the thrift store that’s near our place and got all of these clothes pictured below (4 pants, 4 onesies, 1 sweater, 1 coat and and 4 stuffed animals) for $22!
Of course I will put the stuffed animals in the washing machine, just like I would with new toys. I imagine they will just sit on the shelf as decor the majority of the time anyway so I was glad to only spend a few dollars.
We were also lucky enough to find a rocking chair and a baby basinet at a thrift store a few months ago.
I think the rocking chair was about $20 and then we spent about $15 on sanding paper, primer and paint to upcycle it. All credit to Clay for the elbow grease in giving it a new life. I’m so happy with how it looks and I know i’ll get tons of use out of it while holding and breastfeeding baby boy.
The basinet (stand included) was also only like $15. It had some bedding included as well, but I took it out and replaced it with new muslin bedding that was gifted to us. From what I’ve read online, a baby will only use a basinet for a few months so we were glad to find this one for such a good price. We can splurge more on a crib later, or maybe we’ll get lucky and find a secondhand one in the future too!
My future thrift / secondhand manifestation list includes:
- baby bouncer (preferably in bamboo)
- high quality stroller
- stockpile of glass bottles
- baby books
- winter weight sleep sack
I’m sure we can find these items at thrift stores, local secondhand shops, and Facebook marketplace. I’ll keep you all posted!
